Recently I inherited a gold pocket watch which
was my grandfather's and wish to hand it down
to my grandson. Many years ago I was told by
my parents that it was probably purchased in
the 1930's. The watch has the name 'mirror of
gems' Tonypandy on the watch face. I have
searched the internet for information about
this jewellers store only to find one Rhondda
article that briefly mentions it.

On looking at your web site I wondered if
anyone involved could help me in my search.
We have place a postcard/picture 'want'
on the internet with no success.

Thank you,

Gloria Watts

Hello there,

I wonder if you can add to some family information.

James Thomas was an owner (we think) of the
Tynewydd Colliery in 1877, when there was a
mining disaster. We know James employed my
great-grandmother as his housekeeper -
she was mentioned as his sister-in-law -
and left her (and my grandmother) a sizeable
amount of money in his will (he died in 1901).
He practically disowned his sisters, who
subsequently contested the Will, but lost the case.

The bulk of James' fortune was left to his
grandson - William James Thomas - who was
later knighted for his philanthropy. William
gave a large sum of money to Cardiff Uni,
and there's supposed to be a statue of William
in Cardiff. James has a huge statue in the church-
yard where he was buried.
James started as a door-boy in a pit at the age
of six, and remained illiterate, never spoke
English, and was a devout Calvinist-Methodist.

We would like to build on our knowledge of this
interesting man, who was a real rags-to-riches character.

I'm going to be in the Rhondda area later on this year,
during one of my regular visits from Australia,
and would like to know if there are places of
historical interest remaining in the Tynewydd region.

Yours sincerely

Vanetta Harries

Hello Patann,
Could you please settle a family argument.
My Father-in-law and his daughter were arguing
over the existence of a Georges sweet shop and
tobacconists in Llewellyn St, Pentre.
They moved from the Valley in 1963
so they may have a clouded memory.

Yours,

Paul.

Hello

I came across your website showing some wonderful
old pictures of Tonypandy. I was wondering if
you had any information regarding some relatives
of mine and the business they had.

My great-grandparents and great-great grandparents
owned and ran the Faggot & Peas shop in Danraven Street.
Do you have any information or memories about this?
The names I am looking for are Florence Maud Pearce
(née Smith) (1899-1931) and her father Reuben
George Ballard Smith (c1875-c1935)

I would love to hear from you with any memories
or information you have

Best regards

Louis Brzozka

Hi, my name is Helen Spooner, my nan turns 90
this December and I am trying to find an
historical book about Tonypandy hopefully with
some photos inside. Nan was born in Tonypandy,
Primrose Street I think. I believe one of her
brothers and probably extended family still live
there. I wonder if you could point me in the right direction?

Dear Patann---When I was in the US Army during
WWII, 1943 to 1946, I had the opportunity to
visit cousins in Porth Rhondda, S. Wales.
Their address was Gwilhym Jones, "Rose Dene",
52 Wyndham St., Porth Rhondda, S. Wales, UK.

When I visited, their family consisted of
Gwilhym and Margaret Jones. They had three
children named Cynthia, David and Leonard.
I believe Gwilhym was a manager of a grocery store.
After the war we corresponded for a couple of years
and then I lost tract of them. I am going to be in the continent
to visit invasion cites and the US Cemetery in France.

Is there any way you could direct me in a search for them?
It's quite possible that Gwilhym and Margaret may be dead
but I'm sure their children are still around.

There are other relatives in Swansea named Devereux,
I would appreciate any help you can give me in locating them, also.
If possible I could contact them by e-mail.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Historical information Queries: can you help?

Hi,

I'm looking for someone who can help me try to
find out more about or family of:

WILLIAMS, Lance Corporal, Edward George. 200788,
D Bn., Tank Corps formerly 2512, Machine Gun Corps.
Killed in action, 9th October, 1917.

Hoping to find someone in the region
who can help me, perhaps someone into genealogy ?

I would be very grateful if you could point me
to someone able to help me.

I wonder if you could help:-
My grandfather has a silcer trowel,
presented to his wifes ancestors in 1904
for the stonelaying ceremony in Trehafod Weselyan chapel.
Do you know where I could find out why she was chosen for the ceremony
and where any pictures (if any) of the event may be found.
Regards
Mrs D Thomas

My name is Rhonda, I am named after this place in Wales.
I have family in britian history that goes back to william the conqueror,
but I do not know how rhondda got its name.
please tell me.
thank you... "Grits"

Answer:
We contacted the translation service at The Welsh Language Board,
and the gentleman there says "Rhondda" means
"the good trail", or "the good way".
Hope that helps.

Hi

I have just found your wonderful quotation page
on the internet!

There is one I would like to add, only I don’t
know who wrote it. Perhaps your resources could
help find it out.

I heard it on a TV documentary about the British
occupation of New Zealand in the 19th century,
when one British administrator wrote back to
London the following about the Maori people:

"These natives are a strange and terrible people.
They measure the wealth of a man not by what he
owns, but by what he gives away. It is clear if
we are to civilise them, we must teach them greed.”

If you have any information about that,
I would appreciate it

Thanks

Kerri Hashmi
